Dr. Cheeks is a native of Georgia but was raised in the Palmetto state of South Carolina.  When he completed his college career at South Carolina State University, he returned to Georgia to attend Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his medical degree and completed his residency in Family Medicine. Dr. Cheeks is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP), the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) and the Cellular Medicine Association (CMA).  He is a ringside physician and member of the Georgia State Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Association and the USA Amateur Boxing Association. He enjoys movies, sports, and anything electronic.

Compliant Workforce Management in a Pandemic

Bridget Blinn-Spears is a recognized litigator who helps employers navigate the complexities and peculiarities of managing each unique workforce. She also assists clients with structuring and conducting internal investigations, as well as advising on appropriate documentation and remedial measures. Her practice, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, focuses on employment-related litigation. She defends her clients in state and federal courts against claims involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, restrictive covenant/noncompete agreements, and wage and hour disputes - including collective actions under the Fair Labor Standards Act. She also handles tort claims against individual defendants.

Today were are experiencing extreme business challenges. COVID 19 and Racial Equity events have caused all to “pause”, mostly involuntarily. What this has given us are gifts of reflection and insight. This is occurring on a couple of levels. WHO we are as Leaders? HOW are we leading? WHAT is Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive Leadership? How well we know ourselves is directly related to how we treat others and in some respects how we are treated. Race Equity can drive our Individual and Organizational success!  ARE YOU LEADING!!!

Eric Watson, Executive Consultant for the Kaleidoscope Group, is responsible for developing client strategy, chief diversity officer coaching, advisory board, and serving as a liaison and thought leader at associations and conferences. A credible industry voice and innovator, he is also accountable for market and talent development. The former President and CEO of the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council (CVMSDC), Watson was responsible for the development and execution of strategy to advance business opportunities between major corporations and minority business enterprises in North Carolina, South Carolina and Central Virginia. His responsibilities included membership and funding outreach, and leadership of day-to-day operations related to services, programs, education, staff and fiscal management. With over 38 years’ experience in operations management, including more than 25 years in diversity, equity and inclusion, Watson has developed strategy, created vision and designed leadership mentoring programs to promote diversity and establish accountability within business.

Gwen Turner serves as the Head of  Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Talent Engagement for Northwest Permanente/Kaiser Permanente. In this role, she is responsible for a wide range of companywide programs and initiatives that support, drive, and influence diversity strategy and patient experience. She and the broader team focus on bridging the gap on health disparities, creating the Best Place to work for physicians, and instituting programs that result in exceptional patient care. Gwen has over 20 years of corporate and entrepreneurial experience with companies including Pfizer, Kellogg, Kraft Foods, and Northwestern University. She launched a successful consulting firm focused on culture, inclusion and equity initiatives in the pharmaceutical, higher education and technology sectors.

Shaza Ibrahim, an advocate for mental health awareness, has founded Mind the GAHP with the hope of inspiring others to live more consciously. Shaza has over eight years’ experience facilitating workshops on intersectional topics including, but not limited to, mental health, interpersonal violence, and rape culture. In hearing the need for mental health support in corporate environments, Mind the GAHP was created. As the Program Director, her mission is to make mental health resources more accessible and valuable in workplace environments. Shaza provides employees with skill-based tools, and resources to help them heal, grow, and succeed both personally and professionally.

Erasing Racism: The Talk

This session is designed to assist CEO’s and business owner’s with methods to create a safe space to begin a dialogue about race and bias. The session will offer a brief historical context to the current racial climate. The attendees will be challenged to identify their own biases and lastly offered tools for transformation.

 

Speaker:

Kathy Scott-Gurnell, M.D. has served her community as a mental health provider since 1994.  She received the following degrees: A BS of Science from The University of Texas in Austin (1983); a BA from the College of Biblical Studies (2007); MS from Texas Southern University (1985); and MD from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (1990).   Dr. Scott-Gurnell is board certified in both Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry.  She retired her Private Practice of 13 years in 2007. She served as an Academician at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston Texas for 15 years.  Her clinical experience is vast, and she has published in numerous academic journals and books and has presented locally, nationally and internationally. Currently, Dr. Scott-Gurnell is a Behavioral Medical Director for a large Manage Care company.
